I've only just come in on this thread but after years of research I've come to the conclusion that the main FIVEASH branches are probably quite separate from the VIV(E)ASH ones. The former predominate in Kent and Sussex and may possibly derive from the place name. My own branch (VIV(E)ASH) traces back to at least the 12th century in Wiltshire and is most certainly of Norman/French origin. I'd be delighted to share links with anyone.
