The name is possibly based on the place name of the family's origin in Finland. There is a town called Karvala in Finland. It is on the same lake as the town of Lappajavi Finland. Lappajavi is at the north end of the lake and Karvala is on the west coast of the lake about halfway down. Some maps show the name of the Lake as Lake Lappajavi. The Ellis Island records show arrivals of some Karvalas. Some settled in Minnesota and northern Wisconsin. Karvala is not related to the epic Finnish poem (more like a book)"The Kalevala" except that both are connected to Finland.
